When an animal we love is ill and dying
or has died, we may find the reality too
hard to bear, or may become detached
and numb, or find ourselves in a state
of shock or disbelief. For many of us,
losing an animal friend leaves an empty
void that may not seem to be understood
by others. Some people say the death of
an animal companion is more difficult
than losing a human friend or family
member. When our lives are graced with
the presence of animals who love and
accept us wholeheartedly for who we are,
we experience unconditional love in
every way. They often come into our lives
with a unique purpose to help us heal
and rekindle our self-love and soul’s
inner light. So when it’s time for an
animal to leave, letting go touches
a very fragile part of our being very deeply.
Our grieving can be felt and perceived in
various ways that may change from
moment to moment.

During the grief process
it seems the only way out
of the sorrow, discomfort,
and pain from the loss is
to go through it.  This may
not be simple yet the beauty
of the experience of loss is
letting go with an open heart
to allow new beginnings to
unfold. Although it’s not easy,
the outpouring from this
heartfelt place of pure love
can be cleansing after all.
The true love and empathy
we share with animals when they are alive is similar to the love we share with
them after their death. In the circle of life and death it’s helpful to let go when it
is time. We can always make a heart connection with an animal in spirit
through the doorway of eternal love.

Here are some suggestions you may find helpful to celebrate the memory of
your beloved animal friend:

  • Plant a flower or a garden.
  • Light a candle.
  • Create an altar.
  • Make a journal, collage or draw a picture.
  • Write a letter to your animal friend
  • Make a donation to animals in need

"Discovering our true nature is called 'finding our lotus' by some. The lotus is
not difficult to find if we know where to look…..The lotus represents that which
rises above fetid waters to share its unexpected beauty. It is a symbol of
liberation from painful attachment to that through which our life must pass in
order to reach its original light."
Stephen Levine
"Swing low, sweet

coming for to carry me
home.

Swing low sweet chariot
coming for to carry me
home."
Linda Tillery
